Baldface Hornet

Baldface Hornet
These bees are black in color with accents of an ivory white color on the tip of the abdomen and on the face. They are fast flyers, active predators of other insects, and are very agressive. They build a strong, gray, round nest between the sizes of a softball and basketball using cellulose. Their nest contains many rows of combs where larvae develop. Nests are suspended from an stable object i.e. trees, overhangs or bushes.

Introduction

This atypically large black and white yellow jacket gets its common name of baldfaced from its largely black color but mostly white face, and that of hornet because of its large size and aerial nest. Baldfaced hornets are found throughout the United States.

Habits

Baldfaced hornets are social insects which live in aerial nests. Nests may be located in shrubs, vines, trees, overhangs, utility poles, houses, sheds, or other structures. Nearly all nests are constructed in exposed locations. Nests can be anywhere from ground level up to 66ft in the air or higher. At maturity, the nest can be quite impressive with sizes of up to 14” in diameter and over 24” in length. Often nests located in vegetation are not discovered until the leaves fall in the autumn. Nests are not reused the next season.
